While one of the most redeeming qualities of laminate as a flooring choice is that it's highly-resistant to scratching, that doesn't mean that it can't scratch—because it can. Which is why it's a good idea to keep dirt, sand, and grit off of the surface of your new floor as much as possible. In that interest, you should plan on dust mopping, vacuuming (using the bare floor attachment NOT THE BEATER BAR) or sweeping your laminate floor at least once a week.
Since it's laminate and not hardwood, you also have the option of using a damp mop if you like. And when spills happen, be sure to remove them, and any excess water, as soon as you possibly can.
If sand can scratch laminate, what would a fridge do? Extreme care should be taken whenever moving any appliance or heavy object across your currently scratch-free laminate floor. In fact, you may want to put down some type of protective barrier, such as smooth plywood, so that you can be absolutely certain that neither you, nor your appliance, end up gouging or scratching your laminate.
Mats are more than an ounce of prevention. Protective mats at all entrances effectively help keep dirt and moisture from being tracked inside. Area rugs are also suggested for in front of your sink in the kitchen. Both your mats and any area rugs should be slip-resistant, but be sure you select ones with a backing that won't run the risk of discoloring the floor.
Protect your laminate from tables and chairs. Any metal, iron, wood or even plastic that will be resting, sliding or rolling on top of your new laminate should have an appropriate protective pad such as felt affixed to it. Pay special attention to the chairs you use the most, checking all the casters to assure that they are in good shape and that no metal will actually be touching the laminate. We'd even recommend taking it a step further—and replacing the existing casters with rubber ones.
Care enough to use the right floor care products. Soap-based detergents may very well leave a dull finish on your floor. Abrasive cleaners such as steel wool or scouring powder may even scratch the laminate. Which is why you should always use your laminate manufacturer's suggested cleaners and floor care products only.
